Osteopathic Treatment at Align Body Clinic
This article is intended to give our patients, current and future, an idea about what we consider treatment at our clinic.
What is osteopathic treatment?
Osteopathic treatment can take many forms, in its most traditional sense it is considered a set of philosophical views and manual techniques that seek to improve people’s health via their physical structure. Osteopaths use several variations of manual therapies to influence how a person’s body performs and feels, these may include massage techniques, acupuncture, joint mobilisation, and manipulation. These techniques are often described as osteopathic manipulative techniques. At Align Body Clinic we consider this description of osteopathic to be reductive and limiting, there are several factors that our expert osteopaths will take into account to meet our patient’s needs that should be considered as treatment.
Understanding your needs and goals
Part of getting you better is first understanding what you consider better to be! It may be that we as osteopaths find joints that don’t move as well as they should, or muscles that are tight or weak, but unless changing that results in solving the problem you come in with then why do it at all? As a clinic we are highly focused on your goal and what it is YOU want to achieve from receiving treatment, we then use the skills (more on that below) and options that are best suited to get you to your goal as soon as possible.
Diagnosing and helping you understand your situation.
Many people take advantage of our £19 Patient Assessment offer so they can access a cost-effective diagnosis, explanation of their symptoms, and get an idea of how best to go about improving their situation. Often people are highly relieved to understand why they have symptoms, this is especially important when people have long-term pain. An accurate diagnosis includes not only the structure that is causing the pain (muscle, bone, joint, etc.) but also why the problem has occurred, and how you can get it better. At Align Body Clinic we provide accurate and comprehensive diagnoses that are intended to give you information, perspective on your situation, and steps that you can take to change your symptoms. We value effective communication and education about your condition as one of the most important aspects of our treatment process, after all, research shows that the more you understand your condition the more likely you are to follow guidance and get better!
Self-care and self-help
A lot of what can be considered treatment is advising on what you can do to help yourself. This may be asking you to change how you do an activity or how much of you are doing. We provide personalized exercise plans that are tailored to your needs and have a range of free resources available on our website to help with things like workstation setup and stretches for runners.
Responsiveness and interaction
Part of providing care and treatment is addressing concerns or worries that people may have about their symptoms. Our osteopaths are very accessible and responsive to inquiries and questions so if you are worried about something, you can call our excellent reception service (open six days a week and twelve hours a day) who will let us know you are seeking some advice and your osteopath will call you back the same day!
What does all this mean for our patients?
Each of the above elements may not seem like much when considered individually but the feedback we have from our patients is that as well as providing expert hands-on treatment, our clinic excels in extending care into many areas outside of your appointment which leads to a higher standard of overall care and better patient outcomes.
