If you’ve never had lower back pain of some sort, you’re unusual as it’s one of the most common reasons to visit an osteopath. So why do we get it and what can we do to relieve it? 97% of all lower back pain is caused by a problem with the body’s structural components such as muscles, joints and discs in the spinal column. These structures are very sensitive and can produce quite a lot of pain quite easily if they are overloaded by activities that they are not used to, such as lifting something heavy, or doing a repetitive task for a long time such as gardening or decorating. In contrast to the above, prolonged sitting and general lack of activity have also been proven to make a person more likely to suffer from low back pain. It could be due to degenerative conditions (that may only show up as we get older). Poor posture, is another culprit and with more and more of us desk-bound in our jobs it is an increasing cause of pain for many people. People who suffer an episode of low back pain are more likely to have further episodes in the future. Most low back pain will get better over time, usually within a month, but it could take up to three months with a small percentage of people experiencing problems beyond this. Firstly, seeing a registered osteopath, means you will get a full professional diagnosis of the problem. This is important, as self-diagnosis or guessing at what the problem is might prolong your discomfort. osteopaths are experts at diagnosing which structure around the lower back is causing the pain and why it is struggling. Once we have diagnosed the issues, we can help you in a number of ways depending on what the problem is. A combination of treatment along with carefully prescribed exercises to help alleviate the pain. We will even give you advice on how to stop the problem from reoccurring. Osteopaths are highly trained at performing techniques such as massage, spinal articulation and manipulation that have been proven to relieve pain in the low back area.
