SUFFERING FROM CHEST OR MID-BACK PAIN?
Pain in the mid-back and chest can be worrying as it is often wrongly associated with more serious conditions to do with the heart. In reality however, more often than not it is caused by an inflammation or irritation of part of the spine and is felt in the chest and when breathing because of the connected muscle between the ribs and back.
If however, you are also feeling unwell and suffering from a fever, nausea or shortness of breath then we would advise you to contact your doctor in the first instance.
It can be common for you to experience a reduction in movement in your thoracic spine (back) and your ribs as they are unable to move freely. In some instances you may also have pain around the side of your rib cage or chest which is created by spasms of the intercostal muscles which lie between your ribs.
WHAT CAUSES MID BACK AND CHEST PAIN?
Frequently middle back pain (and the associated pain or restricted movement in the chest) is caused as a result of poor posture from sitting at a computer or desk for long periods of time or by repetitive motion through work or sport. It can however, occasionally be related to more serious conditions such as sudden injury or trauma.
HOW CAN SEEING AN OSTEOPATH HELP?
As with all conditions it is important to get a proper diagnosis of any pain or symptoms you are experiencing. Our friendly team of registered osteopaths can provide you with a full professional diagnosis with one of our 45 min new patient assessments. These are a low risk way for you to get a better understanding of what is wrong and how, working with you, we could help reduce the pain and improve your movement.
Once we have diagnosed the issues, we can help you in a number of ways depending on what the problem is. Everything from massage, joint articulation and manipulation, to carefully prescribed exercises to help alleviate the pain. We will even give you advice on how to stop the problem reoccurring.
If you are in a lot of pain then a new patient consultation not only provides the assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan but includes your first treatment so that you can start on your road to recovery immediately.
